Ron Burgundy//RUN DMC

Coffee and Cigarettes

I don't know how I feel about this one. I rushed the idea, should have sat on the overall joke for a bit. It's not very clear that the cigarettes had the sudden urge to poop, like one does when he or she or it combines the two.

Marc Maron as Sylvester the Cat

I think I've mentioned Marc Maron in my blog posts before, he is the comedian / podcaster that I listen to for hours on end sometimes. If you are a fan of stand up comedy or funny interesting people in general check out his podcast, WTF. It stands for "Where's The Fudge"?? No, it doesn't. Marc calls his garage the "cat ranch" since he takes care of a bunch of cats that were strays. I decided Sylvester the Cat is a good choice of someone to fuse him with. Sylvester also has relationship issues just like Marc! This one turned out OK, I will definitely do a better Marc Maron cartoon in the future.

Johnny Appleseed, the original hipster

Johnny Appleseed was the original hipster. He liked apples before they were popular or "cool", he wore suspenders and ironic hats, and he preferred the old way of farming (aimlessly scattering seeds) to any more modern way. I added a few more things, but you get the point. I don't know why I didn't really put too much into this one, felt like I was just doing it to do it eventually, but here it is.

Farley Bear

So this comic/illustration is my first of the mashups that was done for a client. My friend is starting an online magazine, and wants it to have a classic print magazine feel. He asked me to be the cartoonist and gave me all the creative liberty I want. The idea is that he has "mock interviews" with celebrities and then I take a line or an image from the interview and illustrate it to capture the interview. The first one he sent me was Chris Farley getting interviewed on the set of "Almost Heroes". Farley in the interview said he "felt like a puppet". So, naturally, with my Muppet/Celebrity mashups I decided to make Farley into Fozzie Bear. Here it is!

Droopy Allen

I've always, since I saw pictures of Woody, most likely before I saw a Woody Allen film, I thought the guy was the Droopy Dog cartoon in human form. As he gets older, his jowls become droopier and more exaggerated. They are also both sad characters and have a funny sing songy way of speaking. So I combined the two. This is probably my least favorite so far, it is pretty much Droopy with a few Woody Allen characteristics, the hair, glasses, and sweater. I threw him on a tall director's chair, and that gag is my favorite part of it. It's like, how did you get up there little dog? Hilarious.

Frog Dylan

Here is Frog Dylan. Not much to say really, it's Bob Dylan as Kermit the Frog.

Winnie Smalls

I created this character, Winnie Smalls, a few months ago when I had a realization that Winnie Pooh and Biggie Smalls are similar, not only in dimensions, but that they both are known to wear red shirts. After my Cookie Monster Tom Waits fusion had success on social media, I decided to go back to Winnie Pooh mixed with Biggie and spin it into a comic. Although I wrote earlier that the Spongebob wasn't that fun because it was a digital project, I had a lot of fun doing this one, I can't pinpoint why, it just looked nicer as I was working on it as it went on. I also did a similar background color thing with this strip as I did with Cookie Waits. I'm going to continue with these pop culture and ficitoanl character mashups. Next up: (Kermit the) Frog (Bob) Dylan! Here's the final and the pencil sketch I took a picture of and painted over.

Spongebob Acidpants

So, I realize that drug humor is easy and a pretty cheap way to make something "funny". However, although I'm not too familiar with Spongebob, whenever I saw an episode or a clip I feel like it is one of the most drug influenced cartoons I've ever seen. Mainly, I thought it was hilarious if something lived inside the triangle from the Dark Side of the Moon. I thought of this comic about 10 minutes before I got to work, I doodled it out there, and when I got home I started penciling it on bristol paper. I quickly realized I'm going to have to do this all digitally if I want it to REALLY look like Spongebob. So I just took a crappy photo and started to ink over it, eye-dropping the colors from a picture of Spongebob I was referencing. I added a trippy background and some stars, the Dark Side of the Moon image, turned the opacity down, downloaded the Spongebob font, and it was complete. It was much less fun to do a comic completely digitally and I think the joke is pretty juvenile and my parent's probably aren't thrilled...but here it is. The doodle, sketch, and final.

Single Panel Comics

I have been trying to enter the world of single panel comics. I have always loved single panels, I had ideas here and there but none that I found particularly funny to really try and create. Ever since I got enough money to go wild at the art supply store and get proper inking pens and bristol paper I have been non stop practicing and improving my cartooning skills. I am having a ton of fun coming up with these ideas and drawing and inking them, usually late into the night listening to Marc Maron's podcast: WTF. If you don't know about Marc Maron, he is brilliantly funny and his guests open up to him more than any other interviewer I like to watch.

My general process for these comics is to sketch out a bunch of rough thumbnails (usually at work or wherever I get the idea) on scratch paper to get the staging and composition. Then I do some character design and try to work expressions. When I move to the bristol paper I start with a 3H pencil and block in the scene very lightly, move on to an HB or F (is there a difference?) The final step is convincing myself that my hand is not too shaky from the 3 cups of coffee I've had and start inking. I let myself get loose and tell myself I can correct the boo boos on Photoshop, but I try and get it as close to the look I want on paper. After that, I take photos with my iPhone (lack of working scanner) and touch up the inking and add color and such. Can't stop doing these, they are only getting better (Cookie Monster Tom Waits is the latest) and they are more fun to me than the average Bear and Bread.

Rebranding

Branding oneself can be very difficult. Just ask any cow. I decided to create a new logo a few weeks ago when I had the idea of Darth Vader wearing my kind of glasses (and every other person) and having my name in the Star Wars font. Since my name starts with "St" it works out well. I played around with this idea for awhile, and thought it was an entertaining final product, but not something that represents me or my work. Since high school I entertained myself and my friends with one-line face drawings and I decided to run with this idea. I was also inspired by the classic simple line drawing that Yoko did of John. These types of quick line drawings posses what I find to be very important in design: simplicity, expressiveness.

Well hello there, internet

So, it has been a while since my last post. I had an interesting summer break, traveled to Romania to see my grandmother and Paris, and now entered my senior year of school. I will start posting a lot of my work and process, in the next few weeks.

I am beginning to network with studios and hunt for internships, as they say. I will be making a few more revisions to my site today... but for now check out the temporary demo reel that I have on there!

Brainwashing Design #2

Second "Brainwashing" design for DRT MiNDZ. Not completely finalized I want to make the Disney font white reposition it to take up more space. Also want to add some highlights to the bubbles and water and possibly work on creating a glow coming from a television set coming from the right side. That will take some serious hours to look how I want it and I have a lot of stuff to compile for my portfolio and make a website but I'm guessing in a few months the totally finalized "Brainwashing" will be complete! Sorry for all the run on sentences, I haven't taken an English class in a while.

Brainwashing

A concept that Chris LaBella one of the frontmen of DRT MiNDZ was telling me about. I really liked it and gave it a shot. I want to add some cockroaches, broken bottles, graffiti, drool, puddles, and other nasty stuff. Also I realize that his left hand is on his right arm... I would love to keep going with this right now but sadly I have to go work in a gift shop and sell toothbrushes and terribly designed postcards!

I also posted the black and white version without added inking lines and one of the sketches that I drew up before going digital. I don't know what DRT MiNDZ wants to do with this but I plan to animate it and include it in my portfolio spread for DRT MiNDZ artwork.

Happy Mother's Day to all the moms that look at my blog!

DRT MiNDZ #2

Design #2...

Stool

DRT MiNDZ

Just talked to an old friend from back in the day about his music group and my artwork. Going to do a lot more for his group "DRT MiNDZ", but this is where I started. I like this idea and am going to continue to make more until it looks like I want it to.

Boob Man

Boob man. Also, glowing horn. Felt like drawing something gross and weird. Going to be painting lots of crazy characters like this on a guy's bedroom wall this summer. Can't wait.

Bidniss Card

A business card mock up I designed today. I actually really like this one. I struggled for a while to find something that shows off my style and reveals my personality. The character design is inspired a lot by Brian McGee (Cow and Chicken) as well as Danny Antonucci. Going to print off a bunch at www.moo.com once I get a website with a website domain e-mail. Feedback from friends on facebook helped me decide against stripes on the front and centering the graphics towards the middle of the card.
