I used a new brush pen I just got this weekend to do this. Also, I used a thin felt tip marker. I think my next project will be a self portrait in this style.
Hey Stefan! It's your scraggy neighborhood pal from Oak Grove Grocery, Maxwell! I think these neurotic portraits your starting out are finding the right direction. You should work on a series of them. If you have access to a print studio, these would make good subjects to for screenprint editions. I want to see slobbering, festering man-child paranoia set in these things.
Peter Bagge's character expressions would be a good study for these. He uses great weighted lines and expressive kinetic energy with his inking and facial expressions. Basil Wolverton would be a good subject to look into as well for ideas. He's probably one of the most inventive caricaturists out there. If you need any reference material from either I could loan you some comics from my vaults.
Well hello there, Maxwell! Thanks for the comment, I always appreciate genuine feedback especially for an artist I admire. I got to say that EX GF is really a stand out piece. The letter design is phenomenal, the characters are exciting, and the transformation is so vile and gripping I flipped back and forth at least twenty times. If you have any print copies I would love to purchase one from you.
I am working on a business card right now so that I always have something handy with my information. As I work on more of these portraits it would be awesome to show you them and hear what you think. I've been a Bagge fan for a little while now but I am not as familiar with Basil Wolverton. As I browse what I can find of his work on the internet it makes me want to start drawing immediately... So I'm off to draw, thanks for the inspiration! I will see you soon I'm sure, and we will take it from there!
